Welcome To Isabella Hartley's Personal Page
Dear my friends and family,
I cannot wait to witness for myself the difference we all can make. This summer I am extremely fortunate to have been given the opportunity to volunteer with AYUDA. I will embark on a life-changing experience in the Dominican Republic (DR) as a volunteer for AYUDA. Together with AYUDA's in-country partner organization, Aprendiendo a Vivir (AAV - "learning to live") and my fellow volunteers, we will organize diabetes education initiatives for young people living with diabetes. These initiatives include "Campo Amigo Dominicano" a diabetes education camp for young people living with diabetes, and participating in outreach activities such as hospital & home visits.
WHAT IS AYUDA
When I learned of such an organization, I could not pass up the opportunity to voluneer! I cannot imagine how such a personal experience will educate and inspire me and cannot wait to witness for myself the impact a youth can have and the difference anyone can make. As I hope to pursue a career in medicine, I know such a mission will be, not only the perfect start, but life-changing. AYUDA uniquely allows those of my age to venture in country and to directly have an impact in a place that needs it.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
I'm happy to inform you all that we have just had one of the most successful Campo Amigo programs ever this year! It was a full journey but a journey I will forever be grateful for, for it opened my eyes in unimaginable ways. I could talk and talk but instead I will share with you my greatest takeaway.
We live in a world of hope and big dreams but it's easy for desire and want to cloud such things. The people of the Dominican Republic spread wholesome joy and constant smiles despite the environment they are surrounded by. Anger is too heavy to hold onto and instead, we should take a page from their guidebook and live with laughter and spread light. Perhaps it's the extra vitamin D, as a camper told me, but I know I will strive to live as joyfully and as meaningfully as they live every moment.
I am more thankful to AYUDA than I can say for it has opened my eyes in terms of perhaps where I should go more than I ever anticipated. Working with such glowing children has made me consider what it would be like to pursue pediatrics and continue to aid the most lively of us. AYUDA also allowed me to think creatively and critically, something I love to do, but most of all AYUDA showed me first hand how lucky I am. I always knew it, I've always known it, but seeing it first hand has been more affective than anything else. So thank you. If only we could all walk down the road I've been allowed.
I truly believe that if everyone could walk this same path I have, our ideals of happiness, hope, and what it means to be great would be completely different. AYUDA allowed me to see how much joy is in the world, and gave me the opportunity to bring more to those who are nothing but deserving. Seeing the effect we were able to have on our Campo Amingo kids through the knowledge and smiles we presented them has been strongly the most empowering time of my life.
Thank you AYUDA for a lesson in hope and happiness & thank you for the opportunity to teach, serve, and spread love in a place of smiles, laughter, and need.
To my donors, I will never be able to say thank you enough. My journey was made possible because of your kindness and because of that kindness, I am working on a little something special. I predict you would enjoy seeing the faces you aided rather than having me tell about them so stay tuned!
¡Juntos Somos Más Fuertes!
With much love,
