Welcome to Patrick's Fundraising Page for AYUDA 2018
My name is Patrick Lozier and I'm excited to be joining AYUDA this summer in the Dominican Republic for their Campo Amigo Dominicano, Type 1 Diabetes education, and outreach camp. Together with my fellow volunteers from AYUDA (American Youth Understanding Diabetes Abroad) and Dominican volunteers from AAV (Aprendiendo a Vivir), I will join the effort to organize diabetes education initiatives that will help young individuals and their families learn to live with diabetes by teaching them strategies to properly manage it. These initiatives include the "Campo Amigo Dominicano" diabetes education camp for young people living with diabetes and participating in outreach activities such as hospital & home visits.
I'm a 21-year-old student at the University of Iowa with a passion for empowering individuals to understand all aspects of their diabetes. One of my focuses of study in school is global health and particularly the area of health education. I have learned that education is one of the most powerful tools for improving an individual's health and can impact their lives forever.
I chose to work with this life-changing organization because I believe in its guiding principles. AYUDA promotes the education of diabetes in areas that are underserved by implementing an innovative youth-to-youth education model. This model allows for volunteers and youth living with diabetes to form a connection that promotes optimal learning for the proper ways of managing diabetes.
AYUDA is a non-profit volunteer organization that empowers youth to serve as agents of change in diabetes communities around the world. AYUDA is dedicated to supporting local diabetes communities in their development and implementation of sustainable and global diabetes programs. AYUDA’s innovative peer learning model uses international volunteers as catalysts for empowering local youth living with diabetes to live happy and healthy lives.
AYUDA endeavors to remain a grassroots volunteer organization in a unique way: by asking its volunteers to participate in fundraising for their programs. In fact, without fundraising by volunteers like me, AYUDA’s in-country work would not be possible.
