Welcome to My Personal Page
Hello everyone! After spending my third in the Dominican Republic, I would like to share an update as to how the last five weeks have been. I arrived for the first program, En El Camino (on the road), in late June and worked with people living with type two diabetes, holding education sessions in different sites that we visited. AYUDA and our local partners Aprendiendo a Vivir (AAV - "learning to live") worked together planning each activity for these workshops to ensure the adults attending would get the most out of their time. After an incredible and fulfilling two weeks, I was that much more motivated to be staying for the program that holds a special place in my heart, Campo Amigo. For this program, we planned and successfully executed a camp for children living with type one diabetes. Aside from camp days and the planning leading up to it, we were also able to visit AAV's local foundation, travel to some of the camper's houses, and go on cultural outings. My time as a Volunteer Mentor during these last five weeks was incredible, challenging, empowering, and humbling all at once, and I plan on remaining an active member of this organization.
Thank you to those who have supported and enabled me to do the work that I have done so far with AYUDA!
AYUDA is a non-profit volunteer organization that empowers youth to serve as agents of change in diabetes communities around the world. AYUDA is dedicated to supporting local diabetes communities in their development and implementation of sustainable and global diabetes programs. AYUDA’s innovative peer learning model uses international volunteers as catalysts for empowering local youth living with diabetes to live happy and healthy lives.
AYUDA endeavors to remain a grassroots volunteer organization in a unique way: by asking its volunteers to participate in fundraising for their programs. In fact, without fundraising by volunteers like me, AYUDA’s in-country work would not be possible.
