Welcome to Cassidy's Fundraiser Page for AYUDA 2017
Hello family, friends, and everyone who will support me on this journey,
My name is Cassidy and I am sixteen years old. Many of you know me as a high school student, a volleyball player, or an active member of my community. What some of you may not know is that I have had type 1 diabetes for 15 years.
Although type 1 diabetes is invisible to most people, there is a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes. In my case, this includes over 32,000 finger pricks, 1,825 pump sites changes, and countless hours of estimating and calculating insulin doses. Even when I do everything exactly as I have been advised, sometimes things don't work out. Type 1 diabetes is a silent battle fought by millions of people every day, including me.
One of the first things you learn when you're diagnosed with something like type 1 diabetes is the following: you can either sit around, be sad, and wait for a change to come, or you can go out and make an impact.
I decided that the latter was a better choice.
That decision has taken me to the halls of Congress to speak with senators and representatives, and led me to create a video shown in front of over 10,000 people at the American Diabetes Association Scientific Sessions in New Orleans. It has allowed me to hear the story of a Supreme Court Justice, Sonia Sotomayor who also lives with type 1, to meetings with tech executives in the Silicon Valley, and to participating every year in JDRF’s One Walk with my family and friends. I have done all of my advocacy work in an effort to spread education, empowerment, and most importantly, hope.
Some of this work led me to AYUDA. When I first heard about AYUDA, I fell in love with the organization’s mission. AYUDA is non-profit volunteer organization that empowers youth to serve as the agents of change. The organization is dedicated to supporting local diabetes communities in their development and implementation of sustainable and global diabetes programs. Pulling volunteers from across the globe, AYUDA's team is a group of diverse, engaged and motivated people who are truly inspired to make an impact in the lives of people with diabetes around the world.
With AYUDA, I will have the chance to aid in this effort and to make a difference. This summer, I will to take part in something life changing: I will spend the summer providing diabetes education in Spanish in the Dominican Republic as a counselor at Campo Amigo. To get there, I need your help. My goal is to raise $6,500 by July 1st, and any contribution you can add makes a difference. Any amount you can contribute will make a lasting impact on the lives of people living with type 1 diabetes around the world.
Thank you so much for supporting me on my journey. It truly means the world to me.
