Support AYUDA and AAV En El Camino!!
Why is AYUDA Important to Me?
AYUDA is an organization I really believe in. My cousin Jesse's original vision was to help his friend Jose, who had to deal with diabetes in Ecuador, where it was much more difficult. He and his friend Nick realized that there was a need for diabetes education abroad, and so they rose up to help those in need abroad. I believe this mission is an important one, so I would like to get active and do the same by educating diabetics in the D.R. Your support for this issue is very important to me. Thank you!
This summer, I will embark on a life-changing experience in the Dominican Republic (DR) as a volunteer for AYUDA (American Youth Understanding Diabetes Abroad). Together with AYUDA's in-country partner organization, Aprendiendo a Vivir (AAV - "learning to live") and my fellow volunteers, we will organize diabetes education initiatives for young people and adults living with diabetes in 5 different provinces around the country.
What is AYUDA?
AYUDA is a non-profit volunteer organization founded by my cousin Jesse that empowers youth to serve as agents of change in diabetes communities around the world. My extended family is very devoted to this cause, and my cousins Jesse, Raffi, and Sam have all worked with AYUDA, and I hope to do the same.
AYUDA is dedicated to supporting local diabetes communities in their development and implementation of sustainable and global diabetes programs. AYUDA’s innovative peer learning model uses international volunteers as catalysts for empowering local youth living with diabetes to live happy and healthy lives.
The three principles that drive AYUDA:
Lack of education is just as bad as lack of insulin: AYUDA strives not only to provide diabetes conrol supplies like insulin and testing strips, but also to provide them with the valuable education they need in order to manage diabetes. AYUDA has found that even when young people have the supplies they need, the lack of education can be very dangerous. As we travel, we wll not only be bringing diabetes care supplies to those who might desperately need it, but we will also be bringing them vital education on how to manage their diabetes, which is just as important as insulin.
Youth Volunteer as a force for change: AYUDA endeavors to remain a grassroots volunteer organization in a unique way: by asking its volunteers to participate in fundraising for their programs. In fact, without fundraising by volunteers like me, AYUDA’s in-country work would not be possible. This means that my participation in AYUDA, and the program itself is entirely contingent on your generous support for this fantastic cause.
Understanding is as important as doing: AYUDA partners with local communities and organizations in order to better understand their issues and to help create innovative solutions. Learning and understanding cultural context is critical to developing solutions prior to taking action.
