Welcome to My Personal Page
To my family & friends:
I am so blessed to be given this opportunity this summer to embark on a life-changing experience in the Dominican Republic (DR) as a volunteer for AYUDA. Together with AYUDA's in-country partner organization, Aprendiendo a Vivir (AAV - "learning to live") and my fellow volunteers, we will organize diabetes education initiatives for young people living with diabetes. These initiatives include "Campo Amigo" a diabetes education camp for young people living with diabetes, and participating in outreach activities such as hospital & home visits, as well as the "En El Camino" program, which allows me to travel to multiple provinces in the Dominican Republic while making a difference in the diabetes community. I also have the opportunity to do a one week internship, while staying in the Dominican Republic. This will help me gain more experience in the community and public health field, abroad.
WHY THIS EXPERIENCE IS IMPORTANT
In March of 2010, I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. This is a chronic autoimmune disorder where the body destroys beta cells in the pancreas that produce insulin. Insulin helps glucose be able to enter into cells and be used for energy. Many who are left untreated can be at risk for eye damage, as well as renal, heart, and kidney damage. I am very fortunate to have such amazing doctors who understand. However, not everywhere is that the case. I am so lucky to be able to share my experiences, as well as education with others. In the past I have been a camper at a diabetes camp, at Camp Ho Mita Koda. This experience was very important to me and helped me to learn I was not alone, as well as get more education. I hope that I can give the campers at Campo Amigo and En El Camino the same experience!
WHAT IS AYUDA?
AYUDA is a non-profit volunteer organization that empowers youth to serve as agents of change in diabetes communities around the world. AYUDA is dedicated to supporting local diabetes communities in their development and implementation of sustainable and global diabetes programs. AYUDA’s innovative peer learning model uses international volunteers as catalysts for empowering local youth living with diabetes to live happy and healthy lives.
AYUDA endeavors to remain a grassroots volunteer organization in a unique way: by asking its volunteers to participate in fundraising for their programs. In fact, without fundraising by volunteers like me, AYUDA’s in-country work would not be possible.
