Anna Slayton || What I saw
After 18 days in the Dominican Republic, I am more motivated than ever.
I just returned from my travels with AYUDA to the Dominican Republic to work with their partner organzation, Aprendiendo a Vivir, to educate youth about the steps they can take to live healthier lives with Type 1 diabetes. AYUDA’s Campo Amigo Dominicano organizes a Youth-to-Youth summer program in which I and the other volunteers worked to educate and empower the local children to live better lives with their diabetes. A lack of knowledge is just as dangerous as a lack of insulin, and through our interactive program, these kids are able to learn about their condition in fun and creative ways. I witnessed my campers grow more confident and knowlegable about their diabetes in just the small time that I was able to spend with them. I felt the power of an organization aimed at catalyzing change in this community and creating lasting and sustainable support for these children.
So, though I reached my minimal goal of $6,500, I feel that there is still work to be done in funding this organization so that it can continue to serve as educaction and support for the Domican Republic's diabetes community. You could support our efforts by donating to this page in support of AYUDA and the work we do.
